History of the building
The building was designed by the famous architect Gerrit van Arkel (1858-1918). The special details such as the facade with its bay windows and the special roof construction with stepped gables on both sides make this property very unique. Due to its virtually unaltered state, the building occupies an important place in the oeuvre of the architect, but also in the history of Amsterdam architecture in relation to the design and the many visible original elements. The building called "Johanna House" is named after the wife of the first residents (Fam. M. Messchaert).
Neighborhood
The building is conveniently located at the foot of Vondelpark. The property is within walking distance of the most luxurious shopping streets (including P.C Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat), theaters (including De la Mar, Concertgebouw and cinema), museums (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Stedelijk), nightlife and several restaurants.
