Neighbourhood
Rivierenbuurt literally translates to ‘River neighborhood’. It's name stems from the fact that most of the streets here are named after rivers in the Netherlands. This residential neighborhood was developed in the 1920s for Amsterdam’s middle class. It was part of architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage's ‘Plan Zuid’, and was considered quite an architectural wonder in those days. Even today, architecture buffs find their way around the many examples of Amsterdam School architecture.
Today, you will find a vibrant mix of people in the Rivierenbuurt. It’s safe, green, and easy to reach by both public transport and car, and gives easy access to the center of Amsterdam. Therefore, you will find a lot of families living here. At the same time, the neighbourhood has a high appeal to a younger public. It’s a hipstery ‘hood with charming cafés, underground bars and a fair amount of street art. This combination of the young, the old, students, artists, yuppies, and families have all chosen
