The Haarlemmerstraat and -dijk were declared the nicest shopping street in the Netherlands in 2011. Both streets together form a true gem located in the historical Jordaan area. The local residents consider it a small and cozy village, where everyone knows everyone. You will find all kinds of shops ranging from independent boutiques, specialized shops and small salons to trendy but affordable restaurants and bars and even the oldest cinema in Amsterdam, called the Movies. Famous buildings on the Haarlemmerstraat include the West Indisch Huis, where in 1625 the Dutch West India Company's governors ordered the construction of a fort on the island of Manhattan, laying the foundations for New York City.
