About Burgwallen-Oost

Burgwallen-Oost is the eastern half of Amsterdam's oldest district, the Oude Zijde (Old Side). This compact, historic neighborhood is defined by its medieval street pattern, the iconic Oude Kerk (Old Church) that anchors its center, and the bustling, sometimes chaotic energy of the Red Light District. By day, it's a maze of narrow lanes filled with coffee shops, souvenir stores, and herring stalls; by night, it transforms into a neon-lit hub of nightlife. Despite the crowds, pockets of genuine charm remain, like the quiet courtyards (hofjes) and the serene Beginhof, offering a surprising contrast to the surrounding bustle.

This area is best suited for first-time visitors who want to be in the absolute heart of the action, nightlife seekers, and those who don't mind constant foot traffic. It's less ideal for families with young children or anyone seeking a quiet, residential stay. The neighborhood's compact size means most major sights—Dam Square, the Royal Palace, and the Amsterdam Museum—are within a 10-minute walk. The closest train station is Amsterdam Centraal (10-15 minutes on foot), and trams 4, 9, 14, and 24 stop at Dam Square, providing easy access to Museumplein and other districts.
