Theo Thijssen Museum

About this museum

Step into the intimate world of Dutch writer, teacher, and socialist politician Theo Thijssen at his birthplace, now the Theo Thijssen Museum, nestled in Amsterdam's charming Jordaan district. Best known for his beloved novel "Kees de Jongen" (Kees, the boy), Thijssen's legacy comes alive through a collection of manuscripts, first editions, photographs, and personal belongings. The museum offers a unique glimpse into early 20th-century Amsterdam and the impactful life of a figure who shaped Dutch literature and society.

Plan your visit Thursday through Sunday, from 12:00 to 17:00. Admission is €5 for adults and €2.50 for children. Please note that the museum entrance has a four-step staircase; visitors requiring assistance are encouraged to call ahead. To reach the museum, take tram lines 13, 14, or 17, or bus lines 21, 170, 171, or 172 to the Westermarkt stop from Amsterdam Central Station.

Explore new additions in 2026, including the special exhibition "Eeuwig mooi: 30 jaar Theo Thijssen Museum" (Eternally beautiful: 30 years of Theo Thijssen Museum), which opened on January 10. A commemorative plaque was unveiled at the iconic "Kees" mural on February 13, celebrating Thijssen's most famous character. Additionally, guided walks through the historic Jordaan, themed around Theo Thijssen, are scheduled for select Sundays in June and July.

Beyond the museum, the Jordaan offers a picturesque setting for exploration. You'll find yourself within easy walking distance of other significant Amsterdam attractions, including the Anne Frank House and The Tulip Museum, making it a perfect cultural stop on your itinerary.
