Panorama Mesdag

About this museum

Panorama Mesdag in Den Haag offers a truly unique art experience: a 360-degree cylindrical painting of the sea, dunes, and village of Scheveningen as they looked in 1881. Created by Hendrik Willem Mesdag and a team of artists, this colossal canvas (14 meters high and 120 meters around) is one of the few surviving panoramas in the world. Visitors stand on a central platform under a faux-terrain roof, feeling transported to a bygone seaside day. The museum also features Mesdag’s smaller works and a collection of Barbizon School paintings.

To make the most of your visit, allow about 45 minutes to an hour to fully appreciate the panorama and the adjacent museum rooms. The museum can get busy, especially on weekends, so arriving early or booking tickets online is recommended. Note that the building is not fully accessible to wheelchair users due to the central platform’s stairs; check ahead for alternative access. Photography is allowed without flash.

Located on Zeestraat in the heart of Den Haag, the museum is a short walk from the city center, the Mauritshuis, and the Peace Palace. After your visit, explore the nearby shops and cafés on the Lange Voorhout or enjoy a stroll through the stately streets of the Archipelbuurt neighborhood. The museum is also close to public transport, with tram stops on the Javastraat and Kneuterdijk.
