About this museum
Delve into the rich maritime history and unique ecosystem of the Oosterschelde at the Oosterscheldemuseum in Yerseke. Known as the mussel and oyster capital of Zeeland, Yerseke's heritage comes alive through engaging exhibitions that highlight fishing, the development of oyster and mussel culture, and the region's strong connection to the sea. Discover an extensive collection of historical fishing boats and tools, and learn about the unique natural environment of the Oosterschelde. The museum also shares the poignant history of the "sunken villages" of Zuid-Beveland, including the city of Reimerswaal, which were lost to devastating medieval floods.
Please note: In 2026, the Oosterscheldemuseum is undergoing a significant renovation. During this period, the museum is temporarily located at "De Lepel", Lepelstraat 7B in Yerseke. The museum welcomes visitors Monday through Saturday from 12:30 PM to 4:30 PM and is closed on Sundays. General admission is €5.00 for individuals aged 13 and older, while children up to 12 years old enjoy free entry when supervised.
Enhance your visit with a special group arrangement (minimum 4 persons for €9.00 per person), which includes museum access, a captivating film about mussel culture, and coffee or tea served with a traditional Zeeland bolus. Guided tours are also available for an additional €20.00 per group (maximum 10 persons). The museum is easily accessible by car, with free parking available around Kerkplein. If traveling by public transport, local buses connect from Kruiningen-Yerseke and Goes train stations to the Marijkelaan bus stop, a short walk from the temporary museum location.
