About this museum
Step back in time aboard the Museumstoomtram Hoorn-Medemblik, offering a nostalgic steam tram journey through the scenic West Friesland countryside. This registered museum brings the history of the Dutch steam tram to life, allowing visitors to experience a unique heritage railway between the historic Zuiderzee towns of Hoorn and Medemblik. Consider the popular "Historic Triangle" day trip, which combines the enchanting steam tram ride with a cruise on the museum ship MS Friesland across the IJsselmeer to Enkhuizen, creating a full day of historical exploration.
Planning your visit is key, as the steam tram operates seasonally, typically resuming regular service in April after its annual closure in January, February, and most of March. On operating days, the museum, workshop, shop, and restaurant at Tramstation Hoorn open an hour before the first tram departs and close an hour after the last tram arrives. Always check the official online travel planner for the most current departure times and service updates to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.
Travellers can choose from several ticket options to suit their adventure. The "Dayticket Historic Triangle" is priced at €29.50 for adults and €21.00 for children (4-12 years), offering the full tram and boat experience. For those interested in just the tram, a roundtrip Hoorn-Medemblik ticket costs the same as the Dayticket. One-way tram tickets are also available. Children under 4 years old travel free, and group discounts are offered for parties of 15 or more. Museumkaart and VriendenLoterij VIP-KAART holders enjoy free travel.
Reaching the Museumstoomtram is convenient, whether by car or public transport. If driving, take the A7 highway from Amsterdam or Schiphol Airport (approximately 30 minutes) and exit at Hoorn (exit 8), following signs to P+R Hoorn. The tram station is conveniently located next to this parking area, which costs €3.20 for daily parking, and is adjacent to the pedestrian bridge leading to the NS train station. For public transport users, direct intercity trains connect Hoorn, making it easily accessible from various cities.
