Museum De Burghse Schoole

About this museum

Step back in time at Museum De Burghse Schoole in Burgh-Haamstede, housed in an authentic school building dating back to around 1845. The museum offers a captivating glimpse into 1920s education, complete with a period classroom where you can imagine students writing with ink and teachers using chalk. Beyond the school experience, delve into the rich cultural and historical narrative of the Kop van Schouwen, including a dedicated exhibition on the Karolingische Ringwalburg, a fascinating 9th-century circular stronghold located directly behind the museum.

Exciting developments are underway at Museum De Burghse Schoole throughout 2026, promising a refreshed visitor experience. Following an audit for museum registration in April, the museum anticipates incorporating the adjacent headmaster's residence, a national monument, in the autumn. This expansion will provide more space, with the redecoration of the Ringwalburg exhibition expected to be well underway by the end of the year. The museum plans a temporary closure after these developments to fully redecorate the entire space, with a grand reopening in a "new jacket" anticipated in 2027.

Currently, you can visit the museum from April to June and again in September/October on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. During the peak summer months of July and August, hours extend until 5:00 PM on these same days. Admission is €4.25 for adults and children aged 13 and over, €2.75 for children aged 6 to 12, and free for children under 6. The museum accepts cash, PIN, and credit card payments.

Planning your visit is easy, with the museum being readily accessible by bike. Please note that there is no dedicated car park directly at the museum, and due to the historic nature of the building, it is not accessible to wheelchair users.
