Molenmuseum De Valk

About this museum

Step into the past at Molenmuseum De Valk, an iconic 18th-century tower mill in Leiden that offers a captivating journey into Dutch heritage. This impressive seven-floor corn mill, one of the tallest in the Netherlands, is the last original mill of the nineteen that once stood on Leiden's city walls. Visitors can explore the fully preserved interior, gaining unique insights into the history and operation of windmills, as well as the daily life of a miller's family. The ground floor notably houses the only remaining town miller's residence in the Netherlands, furnished to reflect the atmosphere of the early 1900s.

As you ascend through the mill's various levels, you'll discover exhibits detailing the evolution of milling and the significance of wind power in shaping the Dutch landscape and economy. The climb, though involving steep stairs, is highly rewarding, culminating in a magnificent panoramic view of Leiden from the mill's gallery. For younger visitors, an engaging quest through the six floors helps them uncover a secret word and win a prize, making the historical exploration interactive and fun.

Molenmuseum De Valk welcomes visitors from Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last entry at 4:30 PM. Please note specific closures on New Year's Day, King's Day (April 27th), October 2nd and 3rd, and Christmas Day (December 25th). Admission is €6.00 for adults and €3.00 for children aged 6-15, while children 0-5 years enter free. Holders of a Museum Pass or ICOM card also enjoy complimentary admission.

The museum's central location makes it easily accessible. From Leiden Centraal train station, it's a pleasant 5-6 minute walk. Alternatively, direct bus services from Leiden Centraal (Leiden CS Westzijde stop) to Energiepark, near the museum, take just 2-3 minutes. If traveling by car, convenient parking is available at the Lammermarkt Parking Garage, situated right next to the museum.
