About this museum
Embark on a captivating journey through centuries of Dutch maritime history at the Maritiem Museum Rotterdam, founded in 1874 by Prince Henry of the Netherlands. This dynamic museum invites visitors of all ages to explore the profound impact of the sea on daily life, from historical voyages to modern innovations. Discover an impressive collection of over a million artifacts, including Europe's oldest ship model, and engage with interactive exhibitions like "Plons! The future of the sea," designed for younger adventurers. Don't miss the outdoor museum harbor, featuring a remarkable array of historic vessels and cranes, offering a tangible glimpse into Rotterdam's origins as a world port.
Planning your visit is straightforward, with the museum generally open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Mondays are typically closed, except during school holidays when doors open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Note special closures on New Year's Day, Rotterdam Marathon day, and King's Day. While the museum jetty and workshops in the harbor are accessible year-round (11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monday-Saturday, 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM Sunday), the historic ships and cranes are closed during the winter months (November to April). Online ticket booking is highly recommended, particularly for "Plons!", which requires a time slot reservation.
Admission for adults is €19.00 (€17.50 online), while children aged 4 to 15 years can enter for €13.50 (€12.50 online); children under 4 are free. Students and CJP cardholders receive a reduced rate of €11.50. Free admission is granted to holders of a Museum Card, Rotterdampas, VriendenLoterij, or Rembrandtkaart. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The museum is easily accessible via public transport, with nearby tram and metro stations making it a convenient stop in the city center.
