About this museum

Embark on an interactive journey into the human mind at Dolhuys, Museum Van De Geest in Haarlem. Housed in a historic 700-year-old building that once served as a leper, plague, and madhouse, the museum invites visitors to explore the complexities of mental health, creativity, and identity through personal stories, science, and contemporary art. Your visit includes a multimedia tour, offering an immersive experience that encourages self-reflection on what it means to be human and the diverse nature of our minds.

Starting March 5, 2026, the renowned Outsider Art Collection, previously in Amsterdam, is being relocated to a new venue within Haarlem, promising more space for collaboration and artistic exchange. Keep an eye out for its new home to discover captivating works by artists who express their inner worlds unfiltered. For younger visitors, a special 'Kindertentoonstelling' (Children's Exhibition) is available, offering interactive activities that allow children to explore emotions and create their own "instruction manual".

The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Admission for adults (18+) is €20.00, youth (13-17) is €15.00, and children (8-12) are €10.00, with infants (0-7) entering free. Museumkaart and VriendenLoterij VIP-kaart holders also enjoy free entry. Groups of 8 or more can benefit from a reduced rate of €15.00 per person, effective September 1, 2025. Children up to 11 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Beyond the exhibitions, the museum features a cozy café, Thuys, with a tranquil inner garden and a small playground, perfect for a relaxing break. The museum also hosts workshops, lectures, and guided tours, fostering empathy and understanding around mental health and neurodiversity.
