De Mesdag Collectie
About this museum
Step into the intimate world of 19th-century Dutch and French art at De Mesdag Collectie in Den Haag. This unique museum, once the private residence and studio of renowned Hague School painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag and his equally artistic wife Sientje Mesdag-van Houten, showcases their exceptional personal collection. Explore masterpieces by artists of the Hague School, Barbizon School figures like Charles-François Daubigny—an important precursor of impressionism—and other European contemporaries, all housed in a beautifully preserved historic setting that offers a glimpse into the artistic spirit of the era.
Plan your visit to coincide with compelling temporary exhibitions that complement the permanent collection. Through June 7, 2026, immerse yourself in "Isaac Israëls. In de ban van Van Gogh," featuring Israëls' paintings where iconic Van Gogh works appear in the background. Later in the year, from October 16, 2026, to January 10, 2027, discover "Whistler. Verliefd op Nederland," an exhibition highlighting James McNeill Whistler's dreamy etchings, refined watercolors, and small paintings inspired by the Dutch landscape.
De Mesdag Collectie is easily accessible for your trip to The Hague. From September 1st to December 31st, the museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; during other periods, it welcomes visitors Friday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m..
