About this museum

Step into the grand 17th-century Cromhouthuis, a collection of four exquisite canal houses on Amsterdam's historic Herengracht. Once home to the wealthy Cromhout family, these buildings, designed in Dutch classicist style by Philips Vingboons, now house the Vrije Academie and the captivating Art Zoo Museum. Explore the preserved period rooms and admire the stunning architecture that offers a glimpse into Amsterdam's Golden Age.

While the Cromhouthuis itself offers a rich historical experience, it's important to note that the Bijbels Museum (Biblical Museum) no longer resides here. Since July 2020, the Bijbels Museum has become a nomadic institution, presenting engaging travelling exhibitions focused on biblical stories and themes at various partner venues across the Netherlands. Their original collection, including models of the Tabernacle and Temple Mount, has been transferred to other museums, such as Museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht.

For those visiting the Cromhouthuis, the Art Zoo Museum provides a unique artistic tribute to the animal kingdom through breathtaking taxidermy art by Darwin, Sinke & Van Tongeren. The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:30. Adult tickets are €17.50, with discounts available for children and various museum cards. The Cromhouthuis is conveniently located, about a 20-minute walk or a 5-minute bike ride from Central Station. Public transport options, including trams and buses, are also available nearby.
